Drug-induced hypersensitivity syndrome caused by valproic acid as a monotherapy for epilepsy: First case report in Asian population

چکیده
Valproic acid (VPA) is a broad-spectrum antiseizure drug used for a variety of clinical conditions, such as epilepsy and mood disorders. Drug-induced hypersensitivity syndrome (DRESS) accompanied by hyponatremia, thrombocytopenia, hypoalbuminemia and elevated aminotransferase has never been reported as an adverse effect of VPA monotherapy during titration for epilepsy in Asian population. Hereby, we present the case of a 73-year-old Chinese male who suffered from DRESS and other complications two weeks after initiating VPA treatment for epilepsy. Understanding the risk associated with VPA-induced DRESS, and taking effective measures to avoid the severe side effects are necessary.

Acute hypersensitivity syndrome caused by valproic Acid: a review of the literature and a case report.
Valproic acid (VPA) is an antiepileptic medication used in the treatment of bipolar disorder. Its toxicity profile is characterized by a very rare but well-documented complication-hepatotoxicity. The risk of acute hypersensitivity syndrome (AHS) caused by VPA is less well known. In the vast majority of reported cases of AHS, the syndrome is the result of aromatic anticonvulsants (AAs), such as ...
متن کاملValproic Acid Toxicity Induced by Lacosamide: a Rare Case Report
Valproic acid is commonly used in the treatment of both focal and generalized epilepsies and is often tolerated well. Valproic acid is usually tolerated well, but serious complications, including hepatotoxicity and hyperammonemic encephalopathy, may occur. Here, we report a case of valproic acidinduced hyperammonemic encephalopathy on concomitant use with lacosamide.

BACKGROUND Thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA) is a serious, sometimes life-threatening disorder marked by the presence of endothelial injury and microvascular thrombi. Drug-induced thrombotic microangiopathy (DI-TMA) is one specific TMA syndrome that occurs following drug exposure via drug-dependent antibodies or direct tissue toxicity. Common examples include calcineurin inhibitors Tacrolimus an...

Introduction: Olanzapine (Zyprexa) has become one of the most commonly prescribed atypical antipsychotic drug in Iran, at least in part due to its low potential to cause extra-pyramidal side effects. Case: A 54-year-old man, who was a known case of schizophrenia from 10 years ago and within the recent years, was under periodic medical treatment by antipsychotic drugs. Conclusion: Neurologi...
متن کاملCASE REPORT Amoxicillin-Induced Hypersensitivity After DRESS To Carbamazepine
The anticonvulsant hypersensitivity syndrome, also known as drug rash eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS), is a rare but severe form of adverse cutaneous reaction. Several aromatic anticonvulsant drugs, such as carbamazepine (CBZ), phenytoin, or phenobarbital have been frequently associated with the onset of DRESS. Cross-reactivity among the aromatic anticonvulsants frequently occurs (40...
